Deep Pressure vs. Deep Tissue: Access vs. Force in Manual Therapy

This 2 hour course explores the often-misunderstood relationship between deep pressure and deep tissue techniques, challenging the assumption that greater force creates better results. Participants will learn to differentiate between pressure that is received by the body and force that may override tissue resistance.

Through a BodySmith-informed approach, this class emphasizes how depth is achieved through controlled, sustained application and tissue response rather than intensity alone. Therapists will examine how variations in speed, pressure, and specificity influence client outcomes, and how to recognize when tissue is yielding versus guarding.

Participants will be introduced to principles that support effective, non-aggressive depth, allowing for meaningful change without excessive force. Practical application and guided comparison will help therapists refine their touch, reduce strain, and improve client comfort and results.

This course is designed to enhance clinical awareness and support more intentional, responsive manual therapy within scope of practice.
